Wall Panelling on Stairs: How to Plan, Measure, and Fit It

Panelling up the stairs is the same job as panelling a flat wall, with one number added: the angle of the flight. Every measurement on a staircase wall comes from the rise and going of a single step, and once you have those two, the angles, the panel shapes, and the setting out all follow. This guide covers how stair panelling is put together, how to measure your staircase, the two saw settings that do every cut, and how to fit it, whether you are running shaker-style panels up the flight or simple applied moulding.
What stair panelling looks like, and why
Quick answer: The classic staircase panelling is a single band of panels running parallel to the slope of the stairs, sitting between a raking dado rail above and the stair string below. The sides of every panel stay vertical; only the tops and bottoms lean with the stairs, so each panel on the flight is a parallelogram. Over the hall floor and on the landing the same band levels out and the panels become ordinary rectangles.
This arrangement is not just a style choice. The dado rail follows the pitch because it is doing the same job a handrail does: staying a constant height above the line through the tread nosings, which is where hands, shoulders, and furniture actually pass. And the panels keep their vertical sides because plumb lines are what the eye reads against the door frames, spindles, and newel posts around them. Panelling set out square to the slope looks wrong in a way most people cannot name but everyone notices.

The parts of a panelled staircase wall
A few words come up constantly in stair panelling, and knowing them makes every guide (including this one) easier to follow:
- The string is the wide board that runs up the wall side of the flight, covering the ends of the steps. It is the stair equivalent of a skirting board, but deeper: typically around 250mm, because the steps reach further behind it than you would guess. On most flights only a margin of 50 to 70mm shows above the nosings. Your panelling stands on the string, not on the steps.
- The nosing line is the straight line through the front edge of every tread. It is the datum for the whole wall: the string margin, the panel band, and the dado rail height are all measured plumb (straight up) from it.
- The rake is the sloping run of the wall alongside the flight, as opposed to the level runs along the hall floor and the landing.
- The pitch is the stair angle, measured from horizontal. Most modern UK flights are between 35 and 42 degrees.
- The knee is where a raking line meets a level one: at the foot of the stairs, and again at the landing. The knees are where the mitred joints live, and where most of the head-scratching happens.
A staircase wall usually has three stretches: a level run in the hall before the first step, the raking run up the flight, and a level run on the landing. Each stretch is set out on its own straight line, and the panelling breaks at a plumb line near each knee.
Measuring your staircase
Quick answer: You need three numbers, all from the steps themselves: the rise of one step (vertical, tread surface to tread surface), the going of one step (horizontal, nosing to nosing), and the number of risers in the flight. Everything else is derived.
Measure the rise and going on two or three different steps and use the average, because on older staircases they vary a little. Do not try to measure the slope directly: two tape measurements of one step give a more accurate pitch than an angle gauge held against carpet, and the length of the flight is just the step count times the going.
A typical modern UK flight is 13 risers of about 200mm on a 235mm going, which works out to a 40.4 degree pitch climbing 2.6m between floors. If your numbers come out much steeper than 42 degrees, measure again before cutting anything: a new private stair in England and Wales is built to 42 degrees or less, so a steeper reading is usually a mistyped measurement (though older cottages and loft stairs genuinely can be steeper).
Beyond the steps, note the height you want the dado rail above the nosings (800 to 900mm measured plumb is usual, and matching the landing dado height lets the raking rail mitre cleanly into the level one), and measure the depth of your existing string, since the panelling has to land on it. The two angles: which cut takes which
Quick answer: Stair panelling uses exactly two saw settings. Cuts on raked pieces (the sloping rails of each panel, and the stile ends they meet) are made at the full pitch. Joints where a level run meets a raking one (the dado rail turning onto the landing, the skirting meeting the string) are mitred at half the pitch. On a 40 degree flight, that is a 40 degree setting and a 20 degree setting.
Mixing these up is the single most common stair panelling mistake, and it is easy to see why: half the guidance online says "halve the angle" without saying which joint it is talking about. The rule underneath is simple. A mitre bisects the angle between the two pieces it joins. Where a level moulding meets a raking one, the angle between them is the pitch, so each piece is cut at half of it. Where a sloping rail meets a vertical stile, the pieces are at 90 degrees minus the pitch to each other; setting the saw to the pitch itself closes that joint.
Both settings are comfortably within an ordinary mitre saw's range, so nothing about a staircase needs special tooling. Set the two angles once, label the offcuts, and check every cut against them before you make it. Setting out the panels up the flight
Stair panels are set out between plumb lines, spaced horizontally, exactly as they would be on a flat wall. Drop a plumb line near each knee where the panelling will break, then divide the horizontal distance between them into panels and gaps. The sloping top and bottom rails are then struck parallel to the nosing line, a constant plumb height above it.
Two traps catch nearly everyone:
- The tape on the slope. A gap that is 100mm wide horizontally covers about 131mm measured along a 40 degree rake, as the drawing above shows. If you mark horizontal figures with the tape lying on the slope, every gap comes out narrow and the last panel finishes short. Either mark against a level, or convert your figures to along-the-slope measurements first (the calculator gives both).
- Chasing the kink in the skirting. At each knee, the board below the panelling changes direction somewhere inside the gap between two panels. Do not try to make the panels follow it. Each run's panels are struck against that run's own line, extended straight through the break; the kink in the board underneath simply is not reflected in the panels. This is how the trade sets stairs out, and it is what keeps every panel a clean four-sided shape.
Panel sizes on the flight follow the same proportions as anywhere else: aim for panels a little taller than they are wide, with gaps of 75 to 150mm. Because the band height is fixed by the string and the rail, you are really only choosing the panel count. How to panel your stairs: step by step
MDF strip is the usual material: 9 or 12mm thick, ripped to width or bought as pre-cut strips, stuck and pinned to the wall. Here is the sequence for the classic raked band:
- Plan the layout first. Work out your panel count, gap, rail height, and the two saw angles before buying anything. Design it in the staircase planner and you get a cut list with every length and angle on it.
- Sort the wall surface. Fill and sand any damage. If the wall is papered, strip it: adhesive holds to paint and plaster far better than to paper.
- Mark the datum lines. Mark the plumb height of the rail above two or three nosings and join the marks to draw the raking rail line. Draw the level rail lines on the hall and landing walls at the matching height, and check they meet the raking line where the runs change.
- Fit the dado rail. Rail first, then panels: it is much easier to keep panels parallel to a rail that already exists than to fit a rail to panels. Mitre the knees at half the pitch, and cut the raking lengths generously long before trimming to a tight fit.
- Cut the panel pieces. The vertical stiles are cut with their ends at the pitch angle; the raking rails are cut at the same setting. Cut one panel's pieces, dry-fit it on the wall, and check the joints close before cutting the rest in a batch.
- Fix the panels. Grab adhesive plus a few pins to hold each piece while it cures. Start each run from its plumb break line and work along, checking the sloping rails against the nosing line datum as you go, not against each other, so small errors do not accumulate.
- Caulk, fill, and paint. Caulk every edge where timber meets wall, fill the pin holes, sand lightly, then prime and paint. Painting wall and panelling the same colour is the most forgiving finish and the most common choice on stairs.
The honest difficulty rating: the cutting is no harder than a flat wall once the two angles are set, and the fiddly parts are the two knees. If you have panelled a room before, a staircase is one long weekend.
What about the landing, and the wall below the hall?
The band does not stop where the stairs do. Run it level along the hall wall before the first step, up the flight, and level again across the landing, keeping one rail height throughout (measured from the floor on the level runs, and plumb above the nosings on the rake). One continuous line up the stairwell is what makes the whole thing read as designed rather than applied.
Landings are also where stair panelling usually meets ordinary room panelling, at doorways and along corridors. Common mistakes to avoid
- Setting panels out square to the slope. Panel sides must stay plumb. Square-to-the-rake panels fight every vertical line in the stairwell.
- Using the wrong angle at the knees. Level-meets-rake joints take half the pitch; everything on the rake itself takes the full pitch. Two settings, never one.
- Measuring gaps along the slope. Horizontal figures marked on the rake shrink every gap by the cosine of the pitch. Mark plumb and level, or convert first.
- Standing panelling on a skirting-sized board. The steps reach around 150mm below the nosing line on an ordinary flight, so a 145mm skirting will not cover them. The board up the flight needs to be a proper string depth, usually around 250mm.
- Letting errors accumulate. Check each panel against the datum lines, not against its neighbour. On a 13-step flight, a 2mm-per-panel drift is visible by the top.
- Skipping the plan. An odd remainder at the top of the flight is the give-away of panelling that was started at the bottom and hoped for the best. Set the whole run out on paper (or in the planner, which does the arithmetic and draws it) before the first cut.

Can you put wall panelling on stairs?
Yes, and staircase walls are one of the most popular places for it. The classic arrangement is a band of panels running parallel to the flight between the stair string and a raking dado rail, levelling out along the hall and the landing. Are stair panels rectangles or parallelograms?

What material is best for stair panelling?

Moisture-resistant MDF is worth it in a hallway that gets wet coats and umbrellas. Solid timber works too but costs more and moves more.
Do you panel the stairs before or after fitting the dado rail?
Fit the raking dado rail first, then the panels below it. It is far easier to keep panels parallel to an existing rail than to fit a rail neatly onto existing panels, and the rail establishes the datum line the whole flight is checked against.
How do I work out how many panels fit up my stairs?
Multiply the going of one step by the number of steps to get the horizontal run of the flight, then divide it into panels and gaps the same way as a flat wall: n panels have n plus 1 gaps.
